Virginia Correctional Enterprises (VCE)is a division of the Virginia Department of Corrections, created seventy-five years ago for the purpose of serving the best overall interests of the Commonwealth of Virginia with responsible public policy. In practices, VCE provides opportunities and choices for incarcerated offenders to occupy their time meaningfully during traditional working hours. This helps normalize an otherwise fragile environment wherein thousands of persons are confined on an involuntary basis. These opportunities for meaningful activities include training, working and access to educational and functional demands replicating, as closely as possible, those found in the outside world. These opportunities therefore must be grounded in practical activities such as design, development and production of actual goods and services, comparable to what is available from other public and private sources in the general economy. This paradigm enhances the potential for successful reintegration of the inmate following release to the community by providing a track record of successful work and by nurturing the fundamental work ethic and development of skills in various disciplines.
